Jesus Mora

2011 – 2012 JOHN SIMON GUGGENHEIM MEMORIAL FOUNDATION FELLOW IN FINE ARTS

Jesus Mora was born in 1971 in a suburb near “Tenochtitlan” (Mexico City), an Aztec land. His hometown reflects the fusion among the Spanish conquers, the natives Mazahuas and Otomies and the Americanized lifestyle.

In 1995 Mora studied drawing and painting at Casa de la Cultura de Chapultepec and a Community Centre Unidad Cuahutemoc in Mexico. Two years later he commenced his studies at the Toronto School of Art and Ontario College of Art. In 2002 Mora further studied for eight months in Florence, Italy as part of the OCAD program.

For the past few years Mora has participated in several art projects, exhibitions, workshops, artist residencies and festivals. His artwork is expressed in paintings, photography, video, sculpture and performance where the ancient iconography (Aztec and Mayan) is an important factor in every one of his pieces.

In April 2011, Mora was awarded the prestigious John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in Fine Arts, one of about 220 recipients out of 4000 applicants.
